German textile engineer Peter Herrmann opened Hertex's (short for Herrmann Textiles) first showroom in Cape Town in 1987 with the dream of one day having one in each of South Africa's major cities. Today Hertex has achieved a national presence with 12 showrooms, making it the biggest local company of its kind in the industry. Hertex also operates internationally, with a showroom in London and a well-connected global agent network. Peter works closely together with his three director daughters – Carla Herrmann-van der Merwe, Pauline Herrmann-Keys and Katrin Herrmann-van Dyk.
The business started out in a shed in Epping, an industrial area of Cape Town, where Peter and Coba Herrmann hired their first warehouse, sharing it with a carpenter. Over the years, the three Herrmann daughters also became part of the Hertex team. Surrounded by textiles from a very young age, one would assume that they had always thought that they would eventually be involved in the fabric and textile business, but neither Peter nor his daughters could foresee one day being involved in a family business with Hertex's current scope.
Eldest daughter Carla Herrmann-Van der Merwe is Hertex's operational director, Pauline Herrmann-Keys is the human resource director and youngest daughter Katrin Herrmann-Van Dyk is the sales director. The three of them work closely together with Peter in Hertex's head office in Durbanville, each of them bringing their own unique flavour to the Hertex brand. According to the Herrmanns, this is part of the family business' success recipe – variety.

Hertex is our original brand and the one that established us as a serious player in the South African décor market. It is mainly an upholstery brand, but over the years we have added dual purpose and drapery items to the mix. Hertex is now essentially medium priced product with an emphasis on quality, availability and reliability.
Stonehaus was born out of the need from the market for excellent price points. We achieved this by committing to large quantities from very competitive mills without compromising on quality. Stonehaus offers the full mix of decorating product, curtaining in the form of jacquards, textured plains, prints and sheers as well as upholstery fabrics of every kind.
Like the Hertex brand Stonehaus offers attention to detail with colour and texture; in many cases it is suitable for both domestic and hospitality application.
The faBella brand focuses less on price and more on exclusivity, glamour and luxury. The collections are co-ordinated and presented to maximize these factors; colours are matched to the plains in the other brands making for easy decorating and a one-stop experience in our showrooms.
The Couture brand originated as a way to bring the South African market the latest and hottest fashion direct from the overseas fairs without the delay associated with sampling. The designs are generally more trendy, quirky and current.
Padari is our fastest growing brand and offers a large selection of high fashion rugs carefully chosen to blend with and enhance our wide selection of fabrics.
Studio H is a select brand with a distinctly European influence and flavour. The carefully chosen signature colours are obvious across all collections making the Studio H brand ideal for the most discerning decorators.
We believe that value for money, excellent customer service and personal touch, as well as giving our customers the most up-to-date textiles to choose from, is the cornerstone of our success. We keep very close ties with the European market as far as trends and fashion are concerned, and this enables us to offer our customers the latest textiles to choose from.
Hertex is already exporting to the United Kingdom, Australia, Dubai as well as the United States. Up to date merchandise are available for sale to the rest of Africa.
Hertex Fabrics was named runner up in the 2012 Santam/AHi Enterprise of the Year (Open Category) Award. The awards are intended to acknowledge the establishment and maintenance of profitable entrepreneurships in the South African business sector.
